pokemon favs!
when people think of pokemon as a series, they usually think of the creatures who live alongside the human characters. it makes sense, since pokemon are a pretty damn big part of... well, pokemon. HAHA. but the world of pokemon has a whole lot of amazing human characters, too! this page is basically a record of some of my favourite pokemon trainers, as well as some of my favourite pokemon.

from the moment i saw him during my first playthrough of silver version - when i was literally a Small Child back in 2000 - i knew that silver would become a very important character to me.
i'll admit, i had a weak spot for rival characters as a kid. i was always a firm believer that there was some 'good' in everyone… so almost every time i saw an antagonistic character, i would daydream about becoming friends. it sounds extremely cheesy, but it's true. i was also like this with the rival in rby (to the point that i named my trainer 'gary' in blue version and pretended to be him on my journey) - but silver really took that to a new level. he was always very aggressive, blunt, etc but i never once thought of him as a 'villain' so much as someone who was in a whole lot of pain. also, i figured that he was against team rocket, so he couldn't be all that bad (infallible little kid logic. haha).
even though silver maintains a whole lot of hostility towards both the player and 'weak' pokemon when you first meet him, i was intrigued by his growth over time and the way he began challenging his own harmful beliefs. after all, he was training up his team and not giving up on them even when he lost, time and time again. i really looked forward to encountering him because i was extremely invested in his arc, and, man, did that investment pay off.
despite starting off as someone who supposedly only cared about power and crushing the weak, with the aid of champion lance and the player character, silver was able to grow past that and see the error of his ways - and to become a proper trainer with his own beloved team. i'll never forget how i felt the first time i saw him send out his crobat - a pokemon who can only evolve when its pre-evolution, golbat, truly adores its trainer. i literally get misty-eyed when i think about silver going back to elm to return the starter pokemon that he stole… only for elm to see the strong bond between him and that pokemon, and allow him to keep it. sniff.
nostalgia is a powerful thing, but, even without it, i think silver would have become my favourite pokemon character of all time anyway. hgss was a treat in that it gave even more depth to him, confirming a lot of the theories that were very popular when i was a kid (remember when it wasn't confirmed that he was giovanni's son? wild times!!!) and letting silver's character shine in the best of ways. i went years and years hoping that the pokemon company would acknowledge silver even more and my patience was eventually rewarded when silver finally started getting merch in the form of a scale world figure and a keychain plush. moreover, he was featured in pokemon generations AND got tons and tons of content in the mobile game pokemon masters. my kid self would be so thrilled, y'all. SO thrilled. NEVER GIVE UP.
i adore this lad so much that i'm currently taking on a full odds shiny challenge in my copy of heartgold, which involves catching each of his game-universe pokemon as a shiny. i'll be writing about that in seafare's blog someday - but, until then, you can see my progress on that challenge in its dedicated tag on my tumblr.
(also, as a bit of hilarious trivia, i started dyeing my hair red in high school due to silver and have since adopted that red hair colour as a #signature style of mine. while that might change in the future, given that i spent years upon years of my life influenced by his design, i figured it'd be fun to mention it here!!!)
